My Choice


 Let me remind you


that it was I that chose You

no Fate lured me near 

It was my web you wandered into

In my trap you were ensnared


Let me remind you

I let You love Me

gave you all the puzzle pieces

"the whole picture" to deceive


Let me remind you

You were a means to an end

A stone on which to step

Minor character in the story I spin



Let me remind you

lest you start to believe 

that you had the Choice,

that You could ever Leave


Let me remind you

So I don't forget

I chose incorrectly

and have to live with that regret

     My girls write gift lists religiously. They come rushing up the stairs after a commercial, eyes alight with tiny imaginings, a new and wonderful toy or game filling their heart with desire. "Mom, for my birthday, can I have...?" they say to me with a smile wide, gleaming white baby teeth sparkling and winking at me.      It is easy to placate them in these moments, to tell them, "Sure, write it on your wish list." Christmas is the same, though longer and larger. As the holiday looms in the distance, any jaunts we take to the store are replete with requests as sweet as they are naive. We lie, white lies, about a mysterious man with a gift-giving plan who will make their dreams come true.      I sit thinking about these lists and lies regularly, though they don't trouble me deeply for the girls because I know the trinkets are superficial and easily forgotten. Waiting for Blood.

This is a very personal post and though not gory, it discusses reproduction and loss, and of course, Blood. Please stop now if you'd prefer not to be exposed to anything of that nature.  October 2007       For the last six years of my life I have been waiting for Blood. Seems strange to phrase it that way but like clockwork, Blood flowed into my life every month until we started having children. Before our first daughter was conceived, Blood was predictable, down to the day thanks to modern hormonal medicines. And Blood was a trusty companion, never late or missing her mark. One month, though, we thought we were ready and ended the prevention, and found we were easily pregnant with Baby #1.  That pregnancy flew by and a little early and much too quickly our daughter was born, followed by my old friend Blood. Two week wait.

       TWW. 2weeks. When trying to get pregnant, this is the longest and most tortuous phrase in the whole of a woman's vocabulary. It is the window of time between ovulation and when you could possibly see a BFP: a + sign on one of those HPTs- pee sticks for those who don't speak the lingo.         I've lived that tww a few times when trying to conceive. I've wished time to fly while wishing the end of the cycle would never come. It's a tricky thing to want only one outcome and for each day to spin faster to get to the answer, but to not want the answer to be negative.         I'm living a different two week wait right now. I am waiting to have a baby. A baby. Not just a positive on a pregnancy test...that horrible surprise came months ago, when I had made up my mind to check the quality of my uterus but with the knowledge that I was not really desiring a pregnancy after loss, especially not any time so soon....
